🛣️ We Thought It Was Just a Border Road… Then Meghalaya Showed Us This!

🌄 Assam Vlog – Day 4, Episode 1 | Shillong to Tamabil Border Scenic Drive

Not every memorable travel experience begins at a famous destination. Sometimes, the road itself becomes the highlight of the journey.

Our fourth day in Northeast India began with an exciting drive from Shillong towards Dawki and the Tamabil International Border. What initially seemed like a straightforward journey to a border town soon turned into a spectacular road trip through Meghalaya’s beautiful hills, mist-covered valleys, winding mountain roads and changing landscapes.

Known as the Abode of Clouds, Meghalaya has a special charm. The weather can change within moments, clouds drift across the hills, and every turn seems to reveal another beautiful view.

In this episode of TravelWithSurajit, come along as we leave Shillong behind and experience the scenic drive towards the India–Bangladesh border.

🚗 Beginning the Journey – Leaving Shillong Behind

Our road journey started in Shillong, the beautiful hill capital of Meghalaya. As we left the city, the familiar urban surroundings gradually gave way to quieter roads, green hills and peaceful countryside.

The morning atmosphere made the journey particularly refreshing. The cool mountain air, peaceful surroundings and winding roads created the perfect beginning to a day of exploration.

Instead of rushing towards Dawki, we enjoyed the changing scenery along the way. After all, one of the pleasures of a road trip is discovering beautiful places that are not necessarily marked on the itinerary.

🌫️ Meghalaya’s Misty Mountain Roads

One of the most captivating aspects of the Shillong–Dawki route is its dramatic natural scenery.

The road passes through the beautiful landscapes of the East Khasi Hills, with rolling hills, forested slopes, open valleys and picturesque settlements.

During our drive, low-hanging clouds and drifting mist added a magical atmosphere to the surroundings. At certain stretches, the fog seemed to move across the road and hills, creating beautiful cinematic views.

Every bend offered a different perspective:

  • Winding roads cutting through green hills.
  • Clouds floating above distant valleys.
  • Forest-covered slopes disappearing into the mist.
  • Beautiful countryside views along the highway.
  • Quiet roadside stretches perfect for enjoying the scenery.

For anyone who loves road trips, photography and mountain landscapes, this journey offers plenty of memorable moments.

🌲 From Highland Landscapes to Greener Tropical Surroundings

As the journey continues south towards Dawki, the landscape gradually changes.

The higher hill surroundings around Shillong give way to greener slopes and increasingly tropical-looking vegetation as the route descends towards the border region.

This transition is one of the interesting features of travelling through Meghalaya. Within a relatively short journey, visitors can experience different elevations, vegetation and geographical surroundings.

The changing scenery makes the Shillong–Dawki drive more than just a transfer between two destinations. It becomes an opportunity to appreciate the natural diversity of the Khasi Hills.

📍 Pynursla – A Scenic Stop Along the Way

Pynursla is one of the notable places along the route between Shillong and Dawki.

Surrounded by hills and beautiful countryside, this area offers a glimpse of rural Meghalaya. Depending on weather and visibility, travellers may find attractive valley views and scenic roadside stretches.

It is tempting to stop frequently to capture every beautiful landscape. However, always choose safe, designated places to park and enjoy the surroundings without obstructing traffic or disturbing local communities.

🇮🇳 Tamabil International Border – Where India Meets Bangladesh

The journey towards Dawki also takes visitors close to the Tamabil–Dawki international border, which connects India’s Meghalaya with Bangladesh.

On the Indian side, Dawki is an important border town in the West Jaintia Hills district. Across the international boundary lies Tamabil in Bangladesh.

The border crossing is an important trade and transport connection between the two countries. It is also a point of interest for travellers exploring the region.

Visitors should remember that this is an operational international border, not simply a sightseeing attraction. Follow all security instructions, respect restricted areas and do not attempt to cross the border without the necessary authorisation.

🌊 Dawki – The Gateway to the Crystal-Clear Umngot River

Dawki is widely known among travellers for the beautiful Umngot River, whose remarkably clear water has made it one of Meghalaya’s most photographed attractions.

During suitable weather and water conditions, boats on the river can appear to float above the riverbed, creating the famous transparent-water effect.

The river and surrounding hills make Dawki a popular destination for:

  • Boating and river experiences.
  • Landscape and nature photography.
  • Scenic views of the surrounding hills.
  • Exploring the India–Bangladesh border region.
  • Road trips through the beautiful Jaintia Hills.

Water clarity varies with rainfall, season, river conditions and other environmental factors. Do not assume that the river will look equally transparent throughout the year.

Our journey towards Dawki is a reminder that some of Meghalaya’s most memorable attractions begin long before reaching the final destination.

🕒 Shillong to Dawki / Tamabil – Distance and Travel Time

If you are planning this road trip, here is a general guide:

  • Approximate distance: Around 80–90 km, depending on the exact starting and ending points.
  • Driving time: Approximately 2.5–3.5 hours without extended stops, depending on road and traffic conditions.
  • Main route: Shillong – Pynursla – Dawki – Tamabil.
  • Road journey: A combination of winding hill roads, countryside stretches and descending roads towards the border region.

Allow additional time for photography, sightseeing, refreshments and road conditions.

Travel tip: Check your route before departure, as road diversions, maintenance and local traffic can affect journey time.

🌤️ Best Time for a Shillong to Dawki Road Trip

Meghalaya is beautiful throughout the year, but the experience changes significantly with the seasons.

October to November – Post-Monsoon Beauty

The landscape remains green after the rains, while improving weather can offer beautiful opportunities for scenic drives and photography.

December to February – Winter Views

Winter generally brings cooler weather and, on suitable mornings, atmospheric mist. Carry warm clothing, especially when starting early.

March to April – Pleasant Road Trip Season

These months can offer comfortable conditions for exploring the hills and travelling towards Dawki.

May to September – Monsoon Landscapes

The hills become exceptionally green, but heavy rainfall, fog, slippery roads and occasional disruptions can affect travel. Check local weather and road updates before departure.

There is no guaranteed season for clear river water or uninterrupted mountain views, so keep your plans flexible.

📸 Photography Tips for the Shillong–Dawki Scenic Drive

This route offers wonderful opportunities for landscape and road-trip photography.

  • Capture the winding roads: Use wide-angle compositions to show how the road follows the contours of the hills.
  • Photograph the mist: Low clouds and fog can create beautiful atmospheric frames.
  • Include the surroundings: Capture roads, trees, hills and valleys together to tell the story of the journey.
  • Look for changing landscapes: Photograph the transition from Shillong’s hill surroundings towards the greener border region.
  • Record short video clips: Moving clouds, passing scenery and winding roads can make engaging travel footage.

For safety, never operate a camera or mobile phone while driving. Stop only at safe locations and respect local restrictions.

🎒 What to Carry for the Road Trip

A little preparation can make the journey more comfortable.

  • Camera or smartphone for photography and videos.
  • Light jacket or warm clothing for changing hill weather.
  • Drinking water and light snacks.
  • Power bank and charging cable.
  • Comfortable clothing and footwear.
  • Offline maps or a downloaded route.
  • Basic personal medicines and travel essentials.

If you are planning to continue towards Dawki, the Umngot River or nearby attractions, check local conditions and activity availability in advance.

🌱 Responsible Travel – Enjoy Meghalaya Without Leaving a Footprint

Meghalaya’s beauty depends on its natural environment and the communities that live among these hills.

As responsible travellers, we should:

  • Avoid throwing plastic or other waste along roadsides.
  • Never block narrow roads for photographs.
  • Respect village life, private property and local customs.
  • Follow speed limits and drive carefully on mountain curves.
  • Avoid disturbing wildlife and natural habitats.
  • Follow security instructions around the international border.

A beautiful journey should leave behind wonderful memories, not waste or damage.
