A visit to Assam is never complete without experiencing its vibrant culture, music and traditional celebrations. During our third day in Assam, after exploring the beautiful orchids and biodiversity at Kaziranga Orchid and Biodiversity Park, we discovered something we had not quite expected โ a lively traditional Bihu dance performance!
What began as a visit to admire flowers and explore nature turned into a memorable cultural experience. The colourful traditional attire, energetic dance movements and rhythmic Assamese folk music created an atmosphere filled with happiness and celebration.

๐ Bihu โ The Cultural Heartbeat of Assam
Bihu is one of Assam’s most recognised cultural celebrations. Closely connected with agriculture, changing seasons and community life, Bihu represents joy, hope, prosperity and togetherness.
Assam celebrates three major Bihu festivals:
- Rongali Bihu (Bohag Bihu): Celebrated in April, it welcomes the Assamese New Year and the arrival of spring.
- Kongali Bihu (Kati Bihu): Observed in October, it is associated with a quieter period in the agricultural calendar and prayers for a good harvest.
