Where Dreams Float: A Houseboat Awakening on Dal Lake
Welcome to Day 2 of our Kashmir vlog series! This episode captures the magical, serene experience of waking up on a traditional houseboat on Dal Lake. There’s no better way to start the day than by watching the soft, early morning light spill over the Zabarwan mountains and reflect on the glassy, calm water.
This video is a purely immersive experience—no extra talking, just the natural sounds of the lake coming to life. You’ll see the peaceful sunrise from our houseboat, watch a local flower seller row by on his shikara [00:30], and catch a glimpse of the tranquil life on the water before the day’s adventures begin. The video ends as we get ready for our own shikara to arrive [02:10] and take us on our next journey.

The Dal Lake Morning Experience
Waking up on Dal Lake is an experience in itself, completely different from a hotel stay. The morning is when the lake truly reveals its culture and character.
- The Floating Vegetable Market: The most famous morning event is the Gudri (floating vegetable market). It’s a centuries-old tradition where local farmers gather in their shikaras to sell fresh produce grown in the lake’s floating gardens. It’s a vibrant, colorful, and wonderfully chaotic wholesale market that is a must-see for photographers.
- Important Tip: This market is an early-riser’s reward. It starts as early as 5:00 AM and is usually all over by 7:00 AM. You must arrange a shikara ride in the dark to get there in time.
- Morning Shikara Rides: The best time for a peaceful shikara ride is in the early morning, from sunrise to about 9:00 AM. The water is incredibly calm and reflective, there are fewer crowds, and you can see the local life, like the floating market and vendors, in action. The other best time is at sunset for romantic views.
- Kahwa: The Traditional Morning Drink: No Kashmiri morning is complete without a cup of Kahwa. This is a traditional green tea, brewed in a special brass kettle called a samovar. It is infused with whole spices like cinnamon and cardamom, sweetened, and served with saffron and slivered almonds. It’s a symbol of hospitality and the perfect, warming drink to enjoy while watching the lake wake up.
