The garden felt too calm for what it held.
The Nehru Botanical Garden spread quietly at the foothills of the Zabarwan range, its wide lawns and carefully arranged flower beds glowing under the soft afternoon light. Rows of blooming flowers stretched across the pathways, vibrant and alive, as if untouched by the weight of time.
Tourists walked slowly, pausing for photographs, laughter floating lightly through the air.
Everything looked… simple.
But not for Akash.
The group entered together, but like most natural movements, they didn’t stay that way for long.
The children ran ahead almost instantly—Asha leading, little Deepabali following, both already lost in their own world of curiosity. Ananya went after them, calling out gently, smiling as she tried to keep up.
“Don’t go too far!”
Akash slowed his pace.
Not deliberately. Just enough.
And beside him—Depabali did the same.
It wasn’t planned. It just happened.
🌸 They walked along a quieter path, slightly away from the main crowd.
The flowers here were brighter, denser—reds, yellows, and purples blending into a soft blur of color.
For a while, neither spoke.
The silence wasn’t uncomfortable.
It was… overdue.
“You chose well,” Depabali said finally.
Akash glanced at her. “What?”
“Your life,” she replied. “It looks… peaceful.”
He let out a faint breath. “It is.”
A pause. “Most days.”
She smiled slightly. “Most days is good enough.”
They continued walking.
A gentle breeze moved through the garden, carrying the faint scent of flowers with it.
“You didn’t answer my question properly,” she said after a moment.
Akash looked at her. “Which one?”
“Are you happy?”
He didn’t respond immediately this time.
His eyes moved ahead—to where Ananya stood in the distance, helping the girls take a photo near a cluster of bright tulips.
“Yes,” he said slowly. “I am.”
Depabali followed his gaze.
Watched them for a few seconds.
“She loves you,” she said.
Akash nodded. “Yes.”
There was no hesitation in that answer.
“That’s rare,” Depabali added quietly.
The words felt heavier than they sounded.
“And you?” Akash asked.
She didn’t look at him.
Her eyes stayed on the flowers.
“I told you,” she said. “I have responsibilities.”
“That’s not the same answer.”
She smiled faintly. “I know.”
🌿 They reached a small corner of the garden where the crowd had thinned.
A narrow path curved around a patch of tall flowering plants, partially hiding them from the rest of the visitors.
For the first time since they had met again—they were alone.
Not completely. But enough.
“You disappeared,” Akash said.
The words came out quieter than he intended.
Depabali took a slow breath. “So did you.”
“I tried,” he said. “After college… I thought—”
He stopped.
“Thought what?” she asked.
“That maybe… you would reach out.”
She turned toward him now.
Her expression calm—but not soft.
“I waited,” she said.
The answer was simple.
But it changed everything.
Akash looked at her. “You never said anything.”
“Neither did you.”
⏳ Silence again.
But this time, it wasn’t gentle.
A barrier had formed—
Not visible. But real.
“I had plans,” she continued after a moment. “Exams… career… everything was moving fast.”
“And feelings?” Akash asked quietly.
She held his gaze.
Didn’t answer immediately.
“Not everything fits into plans,” she said finally.
The wind passed between them again.
But it didn’t feel the same anymore.
📸 From a distance, Ananya’s voice called out—
“Akash! Come here! We’re taking a picture!”
The moment broke.
Depabali stepped back slightly.
The space between them returned.
“We should go,” she said.
Akash nodded.
They walked back toward the others—toward the laughter, toward the normalcy.
As if nothing had happened.
But something had.
Because between the blooming flowers of the garden—
A truth had surfaced.
Not fully. Not clearly.
But enough to understand—
Some distances are not created by time.
They are created by silence.
