🌴 Arrival at Port Blair | A Warm Welcome to the Islands
As our flight gently touched down at Veer Savarkar International Airport, a wave of excitement swept through us. The moment the aircraft doors opened, a warm tropical breeze greeted us — different from the mainland, softer yet full of life. The air carried the scent of the sea, and instantly we knew our island journey had truly begun.
At the arrival gate, we were welcomed by a representative from Andaman Kartik, holding a placard with my name. That small gesture itself felt reassuring — a sign that our journey was in good hands. After a warm greeting, we were escorted to our waiting vehicle and headed towards our hotel.
🏨 Warm Welcome at Hotel Rhishabh – Marine Hill
Our stay was arranged at Hotel Rhishabh, located in the peaceful area of Marine Hill, Port Blair. As soon as we arrived, the hotel staff welcomed us with refreshing tender coconut water, followed by an option of tea or coffee — a simple gesture that instantly washed away our travel fatigue.
We were allotted two AC rooms — one for me, my wife, and our daughter, and the other for my father. The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well-maintained. However, we noticed that the geyser in one room wasn’t working properly. Without any delay, the staff shifted us to another room on the same floor — quick service that truly reflected their hospitality.
After settling in, we freshened up and headed to the dining area, as hunger had finally caught up with us.
🍽️ A Hearty Lunch Before Exploring Port Blair
By around 1:00 PM, lunch was served. Since we had left home early in the morning with only tea and had a light snack on the flight, the meal felt incredibly satisfying.

The food was flavorful, comforting, and very much Bengali in taste — exactly what we needed before heading out for sightseeing.

🕰️ Exploring History – The Iconic Cellular Jail
At exactly 2:00 PM, our vehicle arrived at the hotel gate. Along with the driver, we were accompanied by a local guide who would take us through the historic sites of Port Blair.
Our first destination was the iconic Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani — a place that holds a powerful chapter of India’s freedom struggle.
Though our entry tickets had already been arranged by the tour team, I realized I had mistakenly left them in the hotel room. Thankfully, our guide immediately managed everything and arranged fresh tickets without any hassle — a big relief.
Walking through the tall iron gates of the Cellular Jail was an emotional experience. The long corridors, narrow cells, and cold stone walls silently narrated stories of courage, pain, and sacrifice. It was impossible not to feel overwhelmed imagining the lives of freedom fighters who were once imprisoned there.
We began our exploration from the museum sections on both sides of the entrance, which showcased photographs, documents, and personal belongings of revolutionaries. Then we moved towards the upper levels, where a special gallery dedicated to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose displayed rare images and historical details.
At the center of the complex stood the Amar Jyoti, burning continuously in honor of the brave souls who sacrificed everything for the nation. Standing there, surrounded by silence and history, filled our hearts with deep respect and gratitude.
🎭 Light & Sound Show – A Missed Yet Meaningful Moment
Inside the main courtyard, arrangements were already in place for the famous Light and Sound Show, which narrates the untold stories of the freedom fighters through powerful visuals and narration.
Unfortunately, due to a technical issue, the show was temporarily suspended during our visit. While we were disappointed, the experience of walking through the jail itself was powerful enough to leave a lasting impression.
Even without the show, the atmosphere spoke volumes — reminding us that freedom comes at a great cost.

As we stepped out of the Cellular Jail complex, the sun began to dip lower in the sky. The first day of our Andaman journey had already given us memories that would stay with us forever — emotional, humbling, and deeply meaningful.

🏛️ Inside the Cellular Jail: Walking Through History
After that, we moved towards another air-conditioned gallery filled with historical photographs and visual displays. Even though it was December, the weather in Andaman felt surprisingly warm — almost like February or March in Kolkata. The heat outside contrasted sharply with the heavy emotions we were slowly beginning to feel inside the jail premises.
The entire complex is surrounded by massive three-storey wings, all connected to a central structure. At the heart of the jail stands the Ghanta Ghar, visible from every direction. On the ground floor of the Ghanta Ghar, a detailed replica of the entire Cellular Jail is displayed, helping visitors understand the unique architectural design. On the upper floors, various historical panels and descriptions explain the painful past of this place.
🔔 Climbing the Ghanta Ghar
We explored two full wings of the jail and then climbed up to the top of the Ghanta Ghar. From there, the view was simply breathtaking — the vast blue sea stretching endlessly in front of us. We spent some time capturing photos and videos, trying to absorb both the beauty and the silence surrounding us.
After coming down, we sat in the garden area to take some rest. Suddenly, I realized my camera bag was missing. My heart skipped a beat. I quickly remembered that I had kept it near the top while taking photos. Without wasting a moment, I ran back upstairs — and to my great relief, the bag was still there, untouched, exactly where I had left it. That moment truly made me realize how safe and disciplined the place felt.

On the ground level, we listened to a guide explaining the deep history of the Cellular Jail and the countless incidents associated with it. The stories of courage, pain, and sacrifice left a strong impact on all of us.
We then visited the Fasi Ghar, the execution area where many brave freedom fighters were martyred. Standing there, one could almost feel the heaviness of the past. For a few moments, it felt as if time had stopped, and we were transported back into an era of struggle and sacrifice.
🌿 Back to the Present
After spending nearly two hours inside the Cellular Jail complex, we slowly returned to the present. We refilled our water bottles and walked out around 5:30 PM. Outside the jail, there is a beautifully maintained park where we took a few more photographs and selfies before leaving the premises.
🏛️ History of Cellular Jail – A Brief Insight
The Cellular Jail, located in Port Blair, is one of the most important historical landmarks in India. Built by the British between 1896 and 1906, it was designed to imprison political prisoners involved in India’s freedom movement.
The jail was constructed with seven wings radiating from a central tower, each containing three floors. Every cell was small and isolated, measuring approximately 4.5 by 2.7 meters, ensuring complete solitary confinement. This architectural design earned it the name “Cellular Jail.”
Surrounded by the sea, escape was nearly impossible, making it a dreaded place of punishment. Today, it stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made for India’s freedom.

After completing our visit to the Cellular Jail, we headed towards Corbyn’s Cove Beach, one of the most peaceful and scenic beaches near Port Blair. As our vehicle moved along the coastal road, the sound of waves and the sight of coconut trees swaying gently in the evening breeze instantly relaxed our tired minds.
The beach welcomed us with soft golden sand, calm blue waters, and a soothing sea breeze. The sky slowly began changing its colors, preparing for a beautiful sunset. It felt like the perfect ending to a long and emotional day.
🌴 A Calm Evening by the Sea
Corbyn’s Cove was beautifully decorated that evening due to the festive Christmas season. Soft lights were glowing around the area, adding a magical charm to the surroundings. A few visitors were enjoying water activities like boating and sea rides, while others were simply sitting quietly, watching the waves touch the shore.
My daughter, filled with excitement, suddenly wanted to touch the sea water. As she stepped closer, the cool waves splashed over her feet, soaking her socks and lower part of her pants. The water was surprisingly cold at that hour, but her happiness was priceless. Moments like these are what make family trips truly special.
Nearby, we enjoyed some light refreshments — warm coffee and snacks arranged by our tour manager. Though we were informed that hot pakoras were waiting for us back at the hotel, this small beachside break felt equally comforting.
🌇 Sunset Moments to Remember
As the sun slowly dipped into the horizon, the sky transformed into shades of orange, pink, and gold. The reflection on the sea looked magical, almost unreal. We spent a few quiet moments just standing there, soaking in the beauty of nature, clicking a few photographs, and capturing memories that would stay with us forever.
By around 7:30 PM, we headed back to our hotel — tired, relaxed, and completely satisfied after a long yet fulfilling day. The cool sea breeze, peaceful surroundings, and soft sound of waves made the end of the day feel truly special.

🌙 Wrapping Up Day One: A Calm Night Before the Adventure
Our car and tour manager stayed with us throughout the day, guiding us at every step whenever needed. That support made our first day in Andaman completely stress-free and comfortable.
After returning from Corbyn’s Cove Beach, we reached our hotel by evening. A light hunger had already kicked in, so we had some hot chicken pakora and tea, which felt perfect after a long and tiring day.
🏨 About the Hotel & Arrangement
The hotel did not have its own kitchen. Instead, our tour operator had taken multiple rooms on lease at this property. Their main kitchen and restaurant were located near Port Blair main market, close to SBI Bank.
The food was prepared there and transported fresh to the hotel every day.
The owner of the agency is Bengali, and from the very beginning, their behavior, coordination, and hospitality made us feel comfortable and confident about our decision. Everything felt organized and well-managed.
🍽️ Dinner & Payment Formalities
As per our prior agreement, we had already paid 10% of the total package amount in advance before the trip. That night, during dinner, we cleared another 40% of the total payment.
Dinner was served around 9:00 PM, and it was truly satisfying:

Simple, homely, and filling — exactly what we needed after a long day of travel and exploration.
🚢 Planning for the Next Day – Havelock Island
After dinner, the tour owner personally met us and explained the next day’s plan in detail.
🕕 Early Morning Departure
We were informed that the pickup would be around 6:15 AM, as we had to catch the ferry to Havelock Island.
🍱 Breakfast Arrangement
Since it was an early departure, they would pack breakfast for us to carry along.
🧳 Luggage Guidance
We were also informed that after returning from Havelock and Neil Island, we would stay again at the same hotel. So, we could safely leave extra luggage in their locker room.
However, as our luggage was already compact, we decided to carry everything with us — a decision we later realized was not really necessary, especially because handling luggage at the jetty is not very convenient.

With everything planned and clarified, we wished each other good night and retired to our rooms.
