Journey Beyond Boundaries Chapter 34: The Administrative Grind

Chapter 34: The Administrative Grind

Chapter 34: The Administrative Grind - Echoes on the Snow

The next morning opened softer.

The sky was clearer, the air gentler, as they stood beside the flowing stream of Doodh Ganga Yousmarg.
The water rushed over stones, white and restless, echoing through the quiet valley.

Ananya stood near the edge, watching the stream.
Little Deepabali played with pebbles nearby, her laughter blending with the sound of water.
Asha stood a little further away, calm as always.

And beside the flowing river—
Akash and Depabali.

This time—
Ananya didn’t stay distant.

She stood close enough.

Listening.

Understanding.

Depabali looked at the water for a long moment.

Then she spoke.

“My first major crisis came in Bankura,” she said.

Akash glanced at her.

Ananya turned slightly.

“A land dispute,” Depabali continued.

Her voice steady.
Professional.

“Two groups. Political backing on both sides.”

The calmness in her tone made it heavier.

“It wasn’t just about land,” she added.

“It was about power.”

The stream roared louder.

“They expected me to take a side,” she said.

Akash understood immediately.

“And?” he asked.

“I didn’t,” she replied.

A faint pause.

“That made things worse.”

Ananya listened carefully.

“What did you do?” she asked.

Depabali smiled faintly.

“What I was supposed to,” she said.

A pause.

“I followed the rules.”

The simplicity of the answer carried weight.

“But rules don’t satisfy people,” she added.

“Especially when politics is involved.”

The wind moved gently across the valley.

“I worked late,” she continued.

“Every night.”

Her eyes remained fixed on the flowing water.

“Files. Reports. Meetings.”

A faint breath.

“My only company was the sound of a ceiling fan…”

A small pause.

“And stacks of paperwork.”

Akash lowered his gaze.

He could picture it.

A small government quarter.
Dim light.
Endless work.

“And Asha?” Ananya asked softly.

Depabali’s expression softened.

“She learned early,” she said.

“How to wait.”

The words lingered.

“How to understand without asking.”

Ananya glanced toward Asha.

She understood now.

That quiet maturity.

“That life…” Depabali continued, “…it changes you.”

Akash looked at her.

“I achieved what I wanted,” she said.

A pause.

“I became an officer.”

No pride.

No celebration.

Just fact.

“But the cost…” she added slowly.

Her eyes moved toward the mountains.

“…was silence.”

The stream continued its endless flow.

“I am not that girl anymore,” she said.

Akash knew what she meant.

“The one in a denim jacket… arguing in college…”

A faint smile appeared.
Then faded.

“I am the BDO now.”

The title stood heavy.

“A position.”

A role.

A responsibility.

“And a distance,” she added.

Ananya looked at her.

Not with sympathy.

But with understanding.

“Does it feel lonely?” she asked.

Depabali didn’t answer immediately.

Then—
“Yes.”

The honesty was quiet.

But complete.

The three of them stood there.

No tension.

No conflict.

Just truth.

Different lives.
Different paths.

And the cost each had paid—
To reach where they stood.

The river flowed on.

Unstoppable.

Like time.

Like choices.

Like the lives they had built—

Separately.

And now—
Momentarily together.
