Journey Beyond Boundaries Chapter 5: The Shikara’s Truth

Chapter 5: The Shikara’s Truth

Chapter 5: The Shikara’s Truth - Echoes on the Snow

Evening settled gently over the Dal Lake, painting the water in shades of gold and fading blue.
The lake was calm—almost too calm.
Shikaras floated quietly, their reflections stretching across the still surface like unfinished thoughts. In the distance, houseboats stood in long rows, their wooden carvings glowing under the soft light of dusk.
It was the kind of place where silence felt deeper than words.

🛶 “Two boats will be easier,” the boatman said, adjusting the cushions.
“There’s space, but it will be crowded in one.”

Ananya looked at the arrangement—then at the children.
Asha and little Deepabali were already excited, pointing at the water, talking about who would sit where.

“You both sit together,” Ananya said gently, placing a hand on their shoulders. “You’ll enjoy more.”
The girls nodded instantly.

She turned toward Depabali.
“You come with us,” she added with a warm smile.

The decision came naturally. Effortlessly.

Akash didn’t say anything.
But he noticed.

Two shikaras. Two directions. One quiet arrangement.

Asha and little Deepabali climbed into the first boat with Ananya. Their laughter filled the air as the boat slowly drifted away from the wooden dock.

Akash stepped into the second one.
A moment later—Depabali followed.

No one objected. No one questioned.
But something in the air had shifted.

🌊 The boats moved apart slowly, the water between them widening with each gentle push of the oar.

For a while, neither Akash nor Depabali spoke.
The rhythmic sound of the paddle dipping into the lake filled the silence.

From a distance, the laughter of the children reached them—light, carefree, untouched.
Ananya’s voice followed, soft but clear.

“They look happy,” Depabali said quietly.

Akash nodded. “Yes.”

The sky darkened slightly, the last light of the sun stretching thin across the water.

“You trust her,” Depabali added after a moment.

Akash looked at her. “I do.”

A pause.

“And she trusts you,” she said.

This time, he didn’t answer immediately.

The boat drifted gently—closer to the center of the lake, further from everything else.

“Do you think this is a coincidence?” Depabali asked suddenly.

Akash let out a faint breath. “I don’t know.”

“But you’ve thought about it,” she said.

“Yes.”

⏳ Another silence—but this one wasn’t empty.
It carried questions. Unasked. Unanswered.

“Why did you name her… Deepabali?” Depabali asked.

The question came softly—but it landed heavily.

Akash looked at the water, at his reflection slightly distorted by the movement.

“I liked the name,” he said.

She didn’t respond. Just watched him.

“You remember everything,” she said after a few seconds.

He didn’t deny it.

The boat slowed—as if even the lake was listening.

From across the water, Ananya’s shikara passed closer for a moment.
She looked toward them—just briefly.

Her expression didn’t change. She smiled.
But her eyes stayed a second longer than needed.

Then the boat drifted away again.

“Does she know?” Depabali asked quietly.

Akash shook his head. “No.”

“Or maybe…” she said, looking toward the other boat, “she understands more than you think.”

The words lingered.

The sky darkened further.
The golden light faded into a deeper blue.
Small ripples spread across the lake as the wind picked up slightly.

“She sent you here,” Depabali said.

Akash looked at her.

“In this boat,” she continued. “With me.”

He didn’t answer—because there was no clear answer.

Was it coincidence? Convenience? Or something else?

From a distance, the children’s laughter echoed again—bright, uncomplicated.

“Some things don’t stay hidden forever, Akash,” Depabali said softly.

He looked at her.
For a moment, everything else disappeared—the lake, the boats, the world.

“Then why did we hide it?” he asked.

She didn’t answer.

The boat drifted in silence again.

And somewhere between the fading light and the still water—
A truth began to surface.

Not fully. Not clearly.
But enough to understand—

This wasn’t just a reunion.

It was something unfinished.

And perhaps—

Something that was never meant to remain silent.
