Sometimes, the most memorable moments of a journey happen when you stop.
Not at a famous viewpoint.

Just beside the road, with a warm meal in front of you and mountains rising quietly in the distance.
That is exactly what happened during our journey from Sonmarg towards Ganderbal.
After experiencing the magnificent snow-covered landscape around Sonmarg, we stopped for lunch.
The plan was simple:
Eat. Rest. Continue the journey.
But the view had other plans.
White mountain peaks surrounded us, traces of ice and melting snow reminded us that winter was still present at higher elevations, and the peaceful atmosphere made an ordinary lunch feel extraordinary.
Later, our journey continued towards Ganderbal, where another unexpected moment awaited us β a beautiful waterfall beside the route.
One journey.
One meal.
One waterfall.
And countless quiet memories.

There are restaurants with beautiful interiors.
And then there are places where nature becomes the entire backdrop.
Our lunch stop somewhere along the SonmargβGanderbal journey belonged to the second category.
Outside, the Himalayan landscape stretched across the horizon.
Snow remained visible on the higher mountains.
The cold mountain air surrounded us.
And while we enjoyed our meal, the scenery kept reminding us that we were travelling through one of Kashmir’s most beautiful mountain regions.
It was a simple lunch.

Sometimes, a meal tastes better when the Himalayas are sitting at the next table.

Our Day 8 journey had already taken us through the spectacular landscapes of Sonmarg.
Now it was time to leave the high mountain scenery behind and begin the return journey.
But leaving a place like Sonmarg is never simply about driving away.

As we continued towards Ganderbal, the character of the landscape gradually changed.
The high-altitude winter scenery began giving way to greener valleys, settlements and a more familiar roadside environment.
But Kashmir’s beauty remained present.
The road continued through mountain scenery, with the Sindh River and surrounding hills adding to the visual character of the journey.
