🏰 Where Fairies Once Walked – Pari Mahal’s Mystical Terraces 🌙 Kashmir Vlog: Day 4 Ep 2

A Deeper Dive: Pari Mahal – The Abode of Fairies

This episode takes us to the enchanting Pari Mahal, or “Palace of Fairies,” perched on the Zabarwan mountain range overlooking Srinagar and Dal Lake. As you saw in the video, its terraced gardens and historic structure offer not only stunning views but also a glimpse into Kashmir’s rich past.

Here’s a detailed guide to Pari Mahal for your visitors, covering its history, significance, and practical visiting information.

The History & Significance: From Astrology School to Mughal Garden

Pari Mahal has a unique history that sets it apart from other Mughal gardens in Srinagar.

  • Builder and Purpose: It was built in the mid-17th century by Mughal Prince Dara Shikoh, the eldest son of Emperor Shah Jahan. Unlike other gardens built purely for pleasure, Pari Mahal served as a center for learning, particularly for astronomy and astrology, reflecting Dara Shikoh’s interest in Sufism and mysticism. It also functioned as his personal library and residence.
  • Architecture: The structure features six terraces built into the hillside, showcasing Islamic architectural style blended with traditional garden design. It includes water reservoirs and channels, typical of Mughal gardens, but its primary function was academic and spiritual rather than solely recreational.
  • Name Origin: The name “Pari Mahal” or “Abode of Fairies” likely comes from local legends or perhaps the ethereal beauty of the place, especially when illuminated at night. Some sources suggest it might have been named after Dara Shikoh’s wife, Pari Begum, though its primary use was scholastic.
  • Later Uses: Over time, it fell into disuse and was even used as a garrison by Sikh and Dogra rulers before eventually being restored as a historical monument.

Best Time & Season to Visit

Pari Mahal offers beautiful views year-round, but the experience varies with the seasons.

  • Best Overall (Spring & Autumn):
    • April to June: The gardens are lush, flowers are in bloom, and the weather is pleasant, making it ideal for exploring the terraces and enjoying the panoramic views of Dal Lake and Srinagar.
    • September to October: Autumn offers clear skies, crisp air, and beautiful colours in the surrounding landscape. The visibility for city views is often excellent during this time.
  • Summer (July-August): Still a good time to visit, although occasional rain showers are possible. The gardens remain green and vibrant.
  • Winter (November-March): The gardens might be less lush, and it can be quite cold. However, the views of a snow-dusted Srinagar and partially frozen Dal Lake can be uniquely beautiful on clear winter days.

Timings, Tickets, and How to Visit

Visiting Pari Mahal is straightforward.

  • Timings: Pari Mahal is generally open to visitors from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM daily, although timings might slightly vary, especially during winter. It’s always a good idea to check locally for the most current hours.
  • Entry Fee: There is a nominal entry fee. As of recent information, it is around ₹25 per person for adults (Indian nationals). Fees for foreign nationals might be different. Camera charges may also apply.
  • How to Book/Visit:
    • No Advance Booking Needed: You do not need to book tickets in advance. Tickets are purchased at the entrance gate upon arrival.
    • Getting There: Pari Mahal is located just above the Chashme Shahi Garden. It’s easily accessible by taxi or auto-rickshaw from any part of Srinagar. It’s often included as part of a standard local sightseeing tour that covers other Mughal gardens like Chashme Shahi, Nishat Bagh, and Shalimar Bagh.

A visit usually takes about 1-2 hours, allowing enough time to explore the terraces, enjoy the architecture, and soak in the magnificent views over Srinagar.
