🚣 Gliding Through Paradise – Dal Lake’s Peaceful Morning Ride 🌄 Kashmir Vlog: Day 2 Ep 2

Gliding Through Paradise: Dal Lake’s Peaceful Morning Ride

The journey continues! After a tranquil morning awakening on our houseboat, this episode of our Kashmir vlog takes you with us as we board a traditional shikara for a peaceful morning ride.

This is the quintessential Dal Lake experience. We glide silently across the calm, reflective waters, leaving our floating home behind. This video is a purely visual diary, capturing the gentle sound of the paddle, the sights of other shikaras passing by, and the stunning morning views of the mountains that ring the lake. We are on our way from the houseboat to Ghat No. 19, the entry point to mainland Srinagar, to begin our day’s exploration.

The Shikara Ride: A Kashmiri Icon

No trip to Kashmir is complete without a ride on a shikara. These traditional, flat-bottomed wooden boats are a cultural symbol of the region, much like the gondolas of Venice.

  • A Rich History: The design of the shikara has evolved over centuries. It’s built from rot-resistant deodar wood and has been a vital part of Kashmiri life for transport, fishing, and harvesting aquatic vegetation. Today, they are the heart of tourism on Dal Lake.
  • What to See on a Ride: While our video shows a peaceful morning transit, shikara rides can be a main activity. You can hire one for several hours to explore the lake’s hidden corners, including:
    • Floating Markets: The famous, bustling wholesale vegetable market (which happens very early, 5 AM-7 AM) and other markets like Meena Bazaar, where vendors sell handicrafts, flowers, and food from their boats.
    • Char Chinar: An iconic island in the lake, also known as Ropa Lank, which is famous for the four majestic Chinar trees at its corners.
    • Mughal Gardens: Your shikara can take you to the ghats of the famous Mughal Gardens, like Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh, that line the lake’s shore.
    • Landmarks: You can also get beautiful views of landmarks like the Hazratbal Shrine and the Hari Parbat fort from the water.
