Our third day in Kashmir began with a hot cup of tea, lovingly self-made using the hotel room amenities at Home 2, Pahalgam. The morning was cloudy β€” a soft drizzle overnight had left the valley damp, and the air felt cool and misty. Our mood was a little uncertain, but the hope for a bright day ahead kept our spirits alive.

After a refreshing bath and a delicious breakfast of poha, omelette, fruits, and tea, we packed our luggage for checkout. Though our original itinerary included another night in Pahalgam, we discussed with Zubair Bhai (our driver) and decided it was better to return to Srinagar in the evening, making the most of our time.

β˜• Morning Moments & Local Taxi Arrangement

We had already requested the hotel reception the previous night to arrange a local cab for sightseeing. As per plan, our journey started around 8:30 AM. The Pahalgam Taxi Union charges β‚Ή2200 for three sightseeing points β€” Aru Valley, Chandanwari, and Betab Valley β€” with a one-hour halt at each spot. If anyone wishes to stay longer, β‚Ή200 per extra hour applies.

Before starting, there was a small morning twist β€” our raincoats were missing! We soon remembered they were left in Zubair Bhai’s car the previous day. He was staying in another hotel about 4–5 km away, but thankfully, he arranged to send them through a friend passing nearby. After a quick phone call coordination, we collected the raincoats right from the hotel gate β€” a perfect start to an unpredictable day!

We checked out, placed our luggage near the reception, and informed Zubair Bhai via WhatsApp to pick them up later β€” saving precious time for our return journey.

πŸ”οΈ Aru Valley – The First Touch of Snow

By 9 AM, our local driver Aftab Bhai arrived with a white Swift Dzire (#8041), and the journey through Pahalgam’s heart began. On the way to Aru Valley, the scenic Lidder River accompanied us like an old friend β€” flowing gently on one side, framed by pine forests and distant snow peaks.

Aru Valley greeted us with serenity. For the first time on this trip, we could touch real snow, lying beside the valley road. The air was chilly, the sky cloudy, and the sun peeked through occasionally. Around the valley were a few small hotels and shops, with locals offering photos with birds, rabbits, and lambs for β‚Ή50–₹200. Pony riders too invited tourists for short valley rides.

We spent nearly 45 minutes capturing photos and videos, the wind brushing against our faces. It was cold but refreshing β€” and thankfully, no rain interrupted our time.

❄️ Chandanwari – Walking on Ice

Our next destination was Chandanwari, the base point for the Amarnath Yatra. The route was breathtaking β€” the pine forests, glacial streams, and mountain curves painted postcard-perfect views.

As soon as we stepped out of the car, we realized we were standing on ice! The entire area was covered in snow β€” crisp, soft, and white as cotton. The feeling of our feet sinking slightly into the frozen ground was surreal. We clicked dozens of photos near the Amarnath Yatra gateway, played with ice, and even enjoyed a hot cup of black coffee from a small stall nearby.

At one point, our shoe got slightly stuck in the ice β€” a fun, unforgettable moment! After spending about 1 hour 20 minutes, we began our journey to the final destination of the day β€” Betab Valley.

🌿 Betab Valley – The Cinematic Paradise

By around 12:30 PM, we arrived at Betab Valley, the most famous of the three. It was visibly more crowded, the parking lot almost full. This valley, named after the Bollywood movie β€œBetaab”, is enclosed by green fencing and feels like a natural park surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

The entry fee is β‚Ή100 for adults and β‚Ή50 for children. Inside, you’ll find a restaurant, washrooms, and pony ride services. The horse rides inside the valley and along the Lidder River cost between β‚Ή1500–₹2000, depending on negotiation.

The river flows right through the middle, crossed by a charming wooden bridge β€” a perfect spot for photography. My daughter enjoyed momos, while we tried the Kashmiri samosas at the restaurant. Prices were slightly high but worth it for the location and view.

We spent over an hour exploring the area β€” taking photos, walking along the riverbank, and feeling the magic of the moment. Eventually, light rain began again, signaling it was time to leave.

πŸ› Lunch & Return to Srinagar

Around 2:15 PM, we headed back to our hotel where Zubair Bhai was waiting after picking up our luggage. We met him on the roadside, settled Aftab Bhai’s payment (no extra charge for the additional 30–40 minutes), and started toward Srinagar.

By 3 PM, we stopped at a local non-veg restaurant, Dine Fine CafΓ©, recommended by Zubair Bhai. The Kashmiri Pulao β€” fragrant with saffron and nuts β€” paired with Mutton Rogan Josh was simply divine. The warmth of the food matched the warmth of the people.

🌧️ Evening Drive & Check-in at Srinagar

Originally, our plan was to stay another night in Pahalgam. But as the day slowed down and we realized we had covered most of the local attractions, we decided to make the most of our time and return early to Srinagar. The other reason was a kind one β€” our driver, Zubair Bhai, was observing Roza during Ramadan, and we didn’t want his early-morning prayers the next day to delay our local Srinagar sightseeing.

As the rain softly returned, we began our drive back through misty roads, the raindrops tapping gently against the car windows. By the time we reached Srinagar around 7:30 PM, the city was wrapped in twilight.

We checked into The Grand Comfort, a modern 4-star hotel about 2–3 km from Lal Chowk Market. It wasn’t part of our plan, but turned out to be a delightful surprise β€” elegant interiors, comfortable rooms, and prompt service.

After check-in, we had hot coffee using the room amenities, backed up all photos and videos to the hard disk, and recharged our camera batteries. Dinner was served around 9:30 PM β€” hot rotis, chicken curry, mixed vegetables, soup, and dessert (semoi).

When the room heater started humming softly and rain fell outside, we felt that perfect warmth of Kashmir hospitality. The hotel staff even helped us shift to another room when our bathroom geyser wasn’t functioning β€” quick and courteous service indeed.

With a hope for a sunny day tomorrow, we finally went to sleep, dreaming of exploring Srinagar’s Mughal Gardens the next morning.
