Journey Beyond Boundaries Chapter 32: The Quiet Teacher

Chapter 32: The Quiet Teacher

Chapter 32: The Quiet Teacher - Echoes on the Snow

The car finally came to a halt near what the driver called the last stretch of Sonamarg.

Beyond this—
There was nothing much.

Just a small village, scattered wooden houses, a few grazing ponies, and mountains rising endlessly behind them.

Everyone stepped out slowly.

The air felt colder here.
Cleaner.

But inside Akash—
Something felt heavier.

Depabali noticed it.

And perhaps—
For the first time—
She chose to shift the weight.

“How is your life?” she asked gently.

Akash looked at her.

“Your teacher life,” she added.

The question was simple.

But intentional.

Because she had just shared everything.

And she could see—
He was carrying it.

Silently.

“I’m fine,” Akash said at first.

The usual answer.

But Depabali didn’t move.

Didn’t look away.

So he exhaled softly.

“It’s… simple,” he said.

They began walking slowly beside the open stretch, snow crunching softly beneath their feet.

Behind them, Ananya had already moved toward the village with the children.

She didn’t call them.

She understood.

Akash continued—

“I teach at a government school,” he said.

His voice was calm.

“Higher secondary.”

Depabali listened quietly.

“Statistics,” he added.

A faint smile crossed her face.

“Still numbers,” she said.

Akash nodded.

“They’re easier,” he replied softly.

A pause.

“They don’t change.”

The words carried more than just meaning.

“Students?” she asked.

“Different every year,” he said.

“But mostly the same.”

She looked at him.

“How?” she asked.

“They come with questions,” he said.

A faint pause.

“And leave with answers that may or may not matter later.”

Depabali smiled faintly.

“You sound like you don’t believe in it.”

Akash shook his head.

“I do,” he said.

A pause.

“Just not always in the system.”

The wind moved gently across the open ground.

“I like teaching,” he added.

“Standing in front of a class… explaining something… seeing someone understand…”

A faint breath.

“That part feels real.”

Depabali listened.

“And the rest?” she asked.

Akash looked ahead.

“The rest is routine.”

The word stayed.

“Home. School. Responsibilities.”

A pause.

“Life moves in a straight line.”

Depabali glanced at him.

“Parallel lines,” she said softly.

Akash smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

For a moment—
They both stood still.

Then he added—

“Ananya manages everything else.”

Depabali looked toward the distance.

Ananya was there.

Walking with the children.
Laughing softly.

“She’s strong,” Akash said.

There was no hesitation.

“No complications,” he added.

A pause.

“Just clarity.”

Depabali nodded.

“That’s rare,” she said.

“Yes,” Akash replied.

Silence followed.

But this time—
It wasn’t heavy.

It was… settled.

Because both had seen each other’s lives now.

Not imagined.

Not assumed.

But real.

In the distance, Ananya called out—
“Come here! Look at this!”

Her voice carried warmth.

Life.

Akash looked toward her.

Then back at Depabali.

“We should go,” he said.

Depabali nodded.

And for the first time—
There was no hesitation.

Because sometimes—
Understanding doesn’t bring people closer.

It simply shows them—
Where they truly stand.
