Journey Beyond Boundaries Chapter 15: The Valley of Divided Paths

Chapter 15: The Valley of Divided Paths

Chapter 15: The Valley of Divided Paths - Echoes on the Snow

The road to Doodhpathri Meadows stretched quietly through dense pine forests and open valleys.
The car moved steadily, its engine humming softly against the silence of the mountains. Outside, the landscape changed with every turn—green meadows, scattered streams, distant hills fading into mist.
Inside—words were fewer now.

Ananya sat in front, speaking occasionally with the driver. The children, tired from the previous days, leaned against each other in the backseat, their energy finally settling into quiet whispers.

Akash sat by the window.
Watching the road.
But not seeing it.

And beside him—Depabali.
Silent. Present.
Yet somewhere else.

🚗 The rhythm of the journey pulled them both backward again.

To a different road.
A different time.

⏳ College days.

It hadn’t happened suddenly.
Not in a moment like the game room.
Not sharply like the canteen debate.

It had happened slowly.
Quietly.

Like familiarity.

After that day in the canteen, they had started noticing each other more.
Not intentionally—but naturally.

A nod in the corridor.
A shared glance in class.
Standing in the same line at the canteen.

No big conversations.
No dramatic beginnings.

Just small overlaps.

“You’re from Statistics, right?”

That had been her first direct sentence to him—casual, unforced.

Akash had looked up, slightly surprised.

“Yes,” he replied.

“Second year?”

He nodded.

She had smiled faintly.
“I’ve seen you around.”

That was all.

No introduction.
No formalities.

But something shifted.

After that, it became easier.

They started sitting at the same table occasionally.
Not always alone.
Often with others.

Talking about classes.
Subjects.
Exams.

Simple things.

Both of them were from small towns.
Different places.
Different backgrounds.

But the same distance from home.

That made things easier.

“You stay in hostel?” she had asked once.

“Mess,” Akash replied.

“Same,” she said.

And that was enough.

No need to explain more.

🏙️ The city was new to both of them.
Kolkata moved fast—loud, unpredictable.

But between classes and shared spaces—
They found something steady.

Comfort.

Days passed.
Then weeks.

Without either of them realizing—
They had started waiting.

For those small conversations.

For those familiar faces in unfamiliar surroundings.

“You didn’t come yesterday,” she had said once.

“Had class test,” Akash replied.

She nodded.
“Hmm.”

No further questions.

But she had noticed.

And so had he.

🌄 Back in the present—the car slowed as the meadow opened ahead.

Doodhpathri stretched wide and untouched, the green fields glowing under soft sunlight. A narrow stream flowed across it, its water milky white against the grass.
The air felt calmer here.

The car stopped.

The children stepped out first, their energy returning instantly as they ran toward the open field.
Ananya followed, calling out softly.

Akash stepped out.
Took a deep breath.

Depabali stood beside him.

For a moment, neither moved.

Because something felt familiar.

Not the place.

But the feeling.

Standing beside each other.
Without effort.
Without reason.

“Strange,” Depabali said quietly.

Akash looked at her.

“We didn’t even realize… when we became friends.”

He nodded.

“Maybe we never decided,” he said.

She smiled faintly.

“Some things don’t need decisions.”

🌬️ The wind moved across the meadow—soft, endless.

Like two paths—running side by side.

Close.

But slowly—

Dividing.

Without either of them noticing.
