Journey Beyond Boundaries Chapter 10: The Fractured Ice

Chapter 10: The Fractured Ice

Chapter 10: The Fractured Ice - Echoes on the Snow

Tangmarg felt colder than the rest.
Not because of the snow—but because of the silence.
At the edge of the road, near a quiet viewpoint often called Chill Point, the mountains stood closer, heavier, their presence almost overwhelming. The wind moved sharply here, cutting through layers, carrying with it a kind of stillness that didn’t comfort.
It exposed.

🚗 The cars had stopped for a short break.
The children ran ahead again, their laughter softer now, tired but still alive. Ananya stayed with them, pointing out the distant peaks, keeping them close.

Akash walked away.
Not too far. Just enough.

And like before—Depabali followed.

They stood near the edge, where the snow had hardened into uneven patches, cracked in places where footsteps had disturbed it.
Below, the valley stretched wide—endless, quiet.

For a while, neither spoke.
The wind filled the space between them.

“You shouldn’t have told me,” Akash said finally.

Depabali let out a faint breath. “I know.”

“Then why did you?”

She didn’t answer immediately.
Her eyes stayed fixed on the distance.

“Because you asked,” she said.

The simplicity of it made it heavier.

Akash ran a hand through his hair, frustrated.
“This changes things.”

“Does it?” she asked softly.

He looked at her. “Yes.”

“For you,” she said.

The words landed quietly—but sharply.

⏳ A long silence followed.

The wind picked up, brushing against them, cold and restless.

“I managed,” Depabali said after a while.

Akash frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”

“Life,” she replied. “Everything.”
A pause. “Without you.”

He didn’t say anything.

“But that doesn’t mean it was easy,” she added.

Her voice was steady—but something beneath it had begun to crack.

“I waited,” she said again.
Not as a statement—but as something unfinished.

Akash looked at her.

“For how long?” he asked.

She smiled faintly—not out of happiness, but exhaustion.

“Long enough to realize you weren’t coming back.”

🌬️ The wind grew louder.

“And still… you didn’t move on?” he asked.

This time, she laughed—soft, broken.

“You think it’s that simple?”

Her eyes turned toward him now.
And for the first time—they weren’t calm.

“I tried,” she said.
“Do you think I didn’t try?”

Her voice trembled slightly.

“Every decision… every step… I thought I had control.”
A pause.
“But some things don’t leave you.”

Akash felt the weight of it—every word.

“You had everything, Akash,” she continued.
“A life. A family. Someone who loves you.”

Her voice dropped.
“And I had… responsibilities.”

The same word—but this time, it sounded different.
Not strong. Not composed.
Just… empty.

“I told myself it was enough,” she said.
“That Asha was enough.”

Her breath grew uneven.

“But sometimes…”
She stopped.

The silence stretched.

“Sometimes what?” Akash asked quietly.

She looked at him.
And something finally broke.

“It feels like I lived half a life.”

The words came out before she could hold them back.

The wind rushed past—but it didn’t drown her voice.

Akash stood still.
Unable to respond.

“I built everything,” she continued, her voice shaking now.
“Career… respect… stability…”
A pause.
“But not a life I wanted.”

Her eyes filled—but she didn’t look away.

“I thought I was strong enough,” she said.

A tear slipped—unnoticed at first.

“I wasn’t.”

The moment froze.

Akash took a step forward—then stopped.

Because there was nothing he could do.
Nothing he had the right to do.

📣 From a distance, Ananya’s voice called again—
“Akash!”

Reality returned—sharp, immediate.

Depabali wiped her face quickly, turning away.

“I’m fine,” she said.

But the words didn’t hold.

The snow beneath their feet had cracks now—small, but visible.

Like something that had been holding too long… and finally gave way.

Akash stood there for a second longer—looking at her, at the distance that had grown again.

Then he turned—and walked back.

Toward his life.

Leaving behind—
A moment that couldn’t be undone.
