🌄 Setting the Direction – Yousmarg & the Promise of Doodh Ganga
Today’s destination was Yousmarg, a serene alpine valley best known for the gentle flow of the Doodh Ganga River. Located about 47 km from Srinagar and nearly 13 km south of Charar-e-Shariff, Yousmarg rests quietly at an altitude of 2,396 meters, surrounded by snow-clad mountains and vast meadows of pine and fir.
On a normal day, the journey from Srinagar takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. But as we would soon discover, this day had its own rhythm and surprises — ones that only reveal themselves when the road decides to lead the way.
🌅 Morning Before the Journey – Sunrise Over Zabarwan
The day began earlier than usual.
We woke up around 5:30 AM, while Srinagar was still wrapped in silence. From our room window at Hassanz Enclave, we watched the Zabarwan Range slowly emerge with the first light of the morning sun. The soft glow over the mountains felt calming, almost reassuring — a gentle start before another long day on the road.
It was one of those quiet moments that don’t demand attention but stay with you.
☕ Packing the Day – Familiar Rituals Before the Road
After freshening up and enjoying a warm bath, we settled into our usual morning ritual with a cup of tea in the room. The night before, we had requested the hotel staff to pack our breakfast, knowing we would be leaving early.
When we came down around 7:15 AM, the packed breakfast was already ready and waiting for us. With essentials packed, cameras checked, and everything in place, we felt prepared for what Day 9 would bring.
📸 Waiting in the Garden – Before the Journey Begins
With a little time in hand, we waited in the hotel garden for our car. We clicked a few family photos, shared light conversations, and soaked in the calm before stepping back into motion.
The journey hadn’t begun yet, but the feeling of travel had already settled in.
🚗 Departure – On Time, With Curiosity Ahead
Our new driver, Sartaz Bhai, reached near the hotel around 7:50 AM and called to inform us that the car was waiting outside. After a brief exchange, we walked out, greeted him, and settled into the vehicle.
Finally, at sharp 8:00 AM, we started our journey toward Yousmarg.
The road opened ahead, the morning was still young, and none of us yet realized how eventful this drive was about to become.
🗺️ On the Road to Yousmarg – Distance, Direction & Early Views
As we left Srinagar behind, the road guided us eastward toward our destination. The scenery unfolded gently, just as Kashmir roads often do — apple orchards lining the roadside, patches of saffron fields, tall pine trees, and small clusters of homes scattered across open land.
Today’s drive felt different. Less touristy. More local.
We passed through interior Kashmiri villages where daily life continued quietly, untouched by the usual tourist flow.
☕ Breakfast on the Move – Small Pauses, Simple Joys
With the morning well underway, we shared our packed breakfast with Sartaz Bhai, enjoying it alongside the changing scenery outside the car windows. Eating while watching villages wake up added a simple warmth to the journey.
A little later, we stopped briefly at a countryside tea stall — nothing fancy, just a local place where time moves slowly. A 10-minute tea break gave us a chance to stretch, sip something hot, and soak in the surroundings before continuing forward.
🚗 A New Driver, Unfamiliar Roads & Confusing Directions
This was Sartaz Bhai’s first time driving toward Yousmarg, and the unfamiliarity soon began to show. Mobile networks weakened, and as expected in such interiors, Google Maps stopped being reliable.
We began asking locals for directions — and that’s when things became interesting.
Each time, the answers changed.
Some pointed us toward one road, others suggested a completely different route. A few people hadn’t even heard of Yousmarg, which wasn’t entirely surprising. Unlike Gulmarg or Pahalgam, Yousmarg remains relatively untouched, usually visited only by travelers with 7–8 days or more in their Kashmir itinerary.
The valley still lives quietly — outside the usual tourism spotlight.
🔀 A Wrong Turn & A Missed Landmark
Somewhere along these winding roads, we unknowingly took a wrong turn.
The landscape remained beautiful, but familiarity slowly faded. Fuel levels dropped, and the road kept stretching ahead without reassurance. The tension was real — not alarming, but enough to make us more alert.
Because of this detour, we missed Charar-e-Shariff, one of Kashmir’s most important spiritual landmarks, which normally lies on the route to Yousmarg.
🕌 Charar-e-Shariff – The Place We Passed Without Seeing
Charar-e-Shariff, also known as Charar-i-Sharief, is a revered town in Budgam district, located about 30–35 km southwest of Srinagar, at the foothills of the Pir Panjal range.
It is best known for the sacred Dargah of Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Wali (Nund Rishi) — Kashmir’s beloved spiritual saint. The shrine, along with its vast courtyard and distinctive wooden architecture, holds immense religious and historical importance.
Typically, travelers pass through Charar-e-Shariff on the way to Yousmarg, using it as a key landmark before heading further south toward the meadows.
But on this day, the road chose differently.
🎥 When the Journey Becomes the Story
Though unplanned, this stretch of uncertainty became part of the experience. The confusion, the wrong turn, and the missed landmark didn’t take away from the journey — they shaped it.
Sometimes, the road doesn’t lead where you expect.
But it always leads to a story.

🌿 Arrival at Yousmarg – Lost Time, Found Calm
After refueling and finally regaining our sense of direction, we reached Yousmarg at around 1:00 PM — nearly five hours after leaving Srinagar. What was meant to be a comfortable 1.5 to 2-hour drive had turned into a journey filled with uncertainty, wrong turns, and constant second-guessing. While the road offered beautiful views along the way, many of those moments slipped past our attention, overshadowed by the quiet tension of being lost in unfamiliar terrain.
Yet, as soon as the car rolled into Yousmarg, that tension dissolved.
The valley opened up slowly, revealing wide alpine meadows that seemed to stretch endlessly under a blanket of low clouds. The air felt different here — cooler, softer, and untouched. Unlike the dramatic landscapes of Gulmarg or the icy grandeur of Sonmarg, Yousmarg welcomed us with silence and space, as if inviting us to slow down and breathe.
📍 Yousmarg at a Glance – Location & Setting
📌 District: Budgam, Jammu & Kashmir
🚗 Distance from Srinagar: Approx. 47 km
⏱️ Usual Travel Time: 1.5–2.5 hours (traffic & stops dependent)
⛰️ Altitude: Around 2,637 meters (8,652 ft)
The approach road to Yousmarg passes through traditional Kashmiri villages, apple orchards, rolling hills, and pine-covered slopes — a transition that gently prepares you for the calm that awaits at the meadow.
🕊️ Meaning, History & Quiet Belief
The name Yousmarg is believed to have originated from “Yus-Marg,” meaning “Meadow of Jesus.” Local folklore suggests that Hazrat Isa (Jesus Christ) may have passed through this region during his travels, giving the valley a subtle spiritual presence that still lingers in its silence.
During the Mughal period, Yousmarg served as a summer halt for royal caravans, valued for its cool climate and wide grazing lands. Even today, the valley carries that same sense of pause — a place meant for rest rather than spectacle.
🌲 Landscape & Natural Character
Yousmarg unfolds like a vast green carpet, surrounded by:
🌿 Dense pine and fir forests
🏔️ Snow-capped peaks of the Pir Panjal range
💧 Gentle streams feeding the Doodhganga River
🌾 Open pastures with no fences or crowds
There are no large resorts, no noisy marketplaces, and no rush. On clear days, distant peaks like Doodhganga Peak stand quietly against the sky, adding depth to the already expansive horizon.
🐎 What You Can Experience in Yousmarg
🌊 Doodhganga River
The river originates from glaciers in the Pir Panjal range. Its milky-white water gives it the name “Doodh” (milk) and creates perfect spots for quiet reflection.
🐴 Horse Riding Across Meadows
Local pony rides offer a relaxed way to explore the vast grasslands, especially for those who prefer unhurried movement over trekking.
📸 Photography & Nature Walks
Yousmarg is ideal for wide-angle shots, slow cinematic frames, and peaceful walks where nature leads the pace.
🥾 Nilnag Lake Trek (Optional)
A short trek of around 4 km leads to Nilnag Lake, a serene alpine water body surrounded by forest — best suited for travelers with extra time.
🍃 Seasonal Mood of Yousmarg
🌱 Spring (April–May): Fresh green meadows and melting snow
☀️ Summer (June–August): Cool weather and open landscapes
🍂 Autumn (September–October): Golden grasslands and crisp air
❄️ Winter (November–February): Heavy snowfall, limited access, deep silence
🧭 Practical Travel Notes
🧃 Carry snacks and water — food options are limited
📶 Mobile network may be weak or unavailable
⏰ Start early from Srinagar
🕯️ Ideal for a half-day or relaxed full-day visit
🚫 Avoid late evening return during winter months
🌸 Why Yousmarg Feels Different
Yousmarg does not try to impress.
It does not compete with popular destinations. It waits — patiently — for those willing to listen. As we stood there, surrounded by mist, grass, and quiet mountains, one thought stayed with us:
If Gulmarg excites you and Sonmarg amazes you, Yousmarg heals you.

🌿 First Steps into Yousmarg – Meadows, Mist & Moving Water
After parking our car at the designated parking zone, we stepped out and slowly walked toward the wide green entrance of Yousmarg. The air felt cooler here, heavier with moisture, and quieter than the roads we had just left behind. Clouds hung low over the meadow, and a gentle drizzle softened the landscape, giving Yousmarg a completely different mood from the bright days we had experienced in Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Doodhpathri, and Sonamarg.
Before the vast meadow fully opened up, a calm stretch of water caught our attention.
💧 Water Reservoir Near Yousmarg Parking – A Quiet Guardian of the Meadows
The water body near the Yousmarg parking area may look like a small lake at first glance, but it is actually a man-made water reservoir, created to support the fragile balance of life in this alpine region.
This reservoir plays a silent but important role:
🌊 Stores fresh mountain water collected from nearby streams
🌱 Supports irrigation for surrounding meadows and nearby villages
🐄 Helps sustain grazing lands for livestock during drier months
🌾 Maintains the natural greenery of Yousmarg’s vast pasturelands
Unlike tourist attractions designed for attention, this reservoir blends quietly into the landscape — functional, calm, and essential. Standing beside it, with mist floating across the surface, it felt less like infrastructure and more like a natural pause before entering the heart of Yousmarg.
🌧️ Clouds, Drizzle & a Different Kind of Beauty
The weather today chose its own rhythm.
Soft clouds rolled over the meadow, light rain kissed the grass, and distant pine forests appeared and disappeared behind drifting mist. Instead of wide blue skies, Yousmarg welcomed us with subtle tones — muted greens, grey clouds, and a sense of stillness that felt deeply personal.
It wasn’t dramatic.
It was gentle.
And it suited Yousmarg perfectly.
🐎 Choosing the Slower Path – Horse Ride to Doodh Ganga
From the parking point, the road toward Doodh Ganga stream stretches through open meadow and forest trails. Walking would have taken time, and with rain threatening to grow heavier, we decided to hire horses.
After some friendly but firm bargaining, we finalized:
🐴 3 horses
👣 2 horse helpers
💰 Total cost: ₹2,000
The horses waited patiently, their breath visible in the cool air. As we mounted and began moving forward, the sound of hooves on wet ground mixed with the distant flow of water and the rustle of pine trees.
It felt unhurried.
Unforced.
Exactly how Yousmarg wants you to move.
At the end of our journey, satisfied with their care and guidance, I tipped each helper ₹200 — a small gesture of thanks for sharing their everyday paths with us.
🌿 Entering Yousmarg Proper
With mist around us, rain in the air, and Doodh Ganga waiting ahead, this marked our true entry into Yousmarg — not as tourists chasing sights, but as travelers willing to slow down and listen.
The meadow didn’t reveal everything at once.
It asked us to earn it.

🐎 Yousmarg to Doodh Ganga – A Gentle Ride Through Meadows & Mist
Among all the ways to explore Yousmarg, one experience stands out for its simplicity and charm — the horse ride toward Doodh Ganga.
It isn’t rushed. It isn’t loud.
It’s a slow journey where the landscape reveals itself step by step.
As we moved away from the open meadow, the sounds of hooves on soft earth blended with the whisper of pine trees and distant water streams. The path curved gently, guiding us deeper into Yousmarg’s quiet heart.
🌿 The Horse Ride Experience – Distance & Flow
From the main Yousmarg meadow, the route toward Doodh Ganga unfolds gradually through forested trails and grassy clearings.
🟢 Approximate Distance: Short scenic stretch from the main meadow
🕒 Ride Duration:
• 30–60 minutes for the basic loop
• Up to 1.5–2 hours for extended exploration
🌲 Terrain: Soft meadow paths, light forest trails, gentle slopes
The pace was calm and reassuring — ideal even for first-time riders. Each turn revealed a new texture of Yousmarg: mossy ground, pine shadows, open sky, and distant mountain silhouettes.
🐴 Pony Ride Options & Local Experience
Local horse handlers guide these rides with ease and familiarity. The horses move steadily, trained to navigate the uneven terrain with confidence.
💰 Typical Charges (Approximate):
• Short meadow loop: ₹300–₹800 per person
• Extended ride toward Doodh Ganga: ₹800–₹1,200+
(Prices vary by season, duration, and negotiation)
We opted for a relaxed route that allowed time to absorb the surroundings rather than rush toward a destination. For families or those new to riding, handlers are always nearby, guiding both the horse and the rider.
🌲 The Trail Itself – Calm, Quiet, and Timeless
The beauty of this ride lies not in speed, but in stillness.
Tall pine trees stood like silent guardians.
The ground softened under layers of grass and fallen needles.
Occasionally, the sound of flowing water reminded us how close the Doodh Ganga stream was.
Every few minutes, we paused — sometimes for photographs, sometimes simply to breathe and look around. The kind of pauses that feel necessary, not planned.
🌦️ Best Time & Tips for the Ride
✨ Best Time:
• Morning: Fresh air, softer light
• Late afternoon: Gentle shadows and golden tones
🧭 Helpful Tips:
• Fix the price clearly before starting
• Wear comfortable shoes and layered clothing
• Carry a light jacket — weather changes quickly
• Let the horse move at its natural pace
🌄 A Journey Meant to Be Felt
The ride to Doodh Ganga wasn’t about reaching a point on the map.
It was about surrendering to the rhythm of the land — one step, one breath, one quiet moment at a time.
As the trail opened toward the river ahead, we realized something simple yet powerful:
Yousmarg doesn’t rush you.
It teaches you how to slow down.

Doodh Ganga – Where Silence Flows Like Water
The ride was calm and unhurried. Without a guide, we let the horses choose their own rhythm, moving slowly through pine forests and open grassy trails. The path felt natural — as if it had been shaped more by time than by people. Step by step, the noise of the world faded, replaced by the quiet rhythm of hooves and the soft rustle of leaves.
Soon, we reached the top view of Doodh Ganga.
There is no fixed staircase leading down to the river. Instead, the descent unfolds naturally — gentle slopes, uneven earth, and narrow paths carved by years of footsteps and flowing water. Going down feels easy, almost inviting, while the return climb reminds you of the terrain’s raw, untouched character. Good shoes matter here, not for difficulty, but for comfort and balance.
Doodh Ganga – The River of Milk
Doodh Ganga, meaning “River of Milk,” earns its name from the way its fast-flowing waters turn milky white as they rush over stones and narrow channels. Fed by the higher reaches of the Pir Panjal range, the river winds through dense pine forests and wide meadows, carrying with it a sense of purity that feels untouched by time.
Unlike crowded tourist spots, this place remains raw and peaceful. The river flows freely — sometimes calm, sometimes playful — accompanied only by the sound of wind through pine trees and water brushing against stone.
Here, there are no concrete ghats, no vendors calling out, no artificial structures — just nature in its most honest form.
A Place That Slows You Down
The atmosphere around Doodh Ganga naturally invites stillness.
You Hear:
🌊 The continuous murmur of flowing water
🌲 The soft rustle of pine leaves
🔔 Occasional horse bells echoing in the distance
And then… silence.
The kind of silence that feels alive.
The riverbanks open into soft green patches where travelers often pause — some to rest, some to take photographs, and some simply to sit quietly, letting the cold air and flowing water reset their thoughts. The clear water reflects the sky and surrounding trees, creating moments perfect for photography or quiet reflection.
A Simple, Unspoiled Experience
There are no shops, no food stalls, and no commercial activity here — and that’s what keeps Doodh Ganga special. Visitors often carry their own snacks or tea, enjoying a peaceful break surrounded by nature.
It’s not a place to rush through.
It’s a place to pause.
In One Thought
Doodh Ganga isn’t just a scenic spot —
it’s where time slows, thoughts settle, and nature speaks softly, reminding you how beautiful simplicity can be.

Doodh Ganga – Laughter, Water & Simple Joys
🌊 Time by the River
After reaching the banks of the Doodh Ganga, we slowed down completely. There was no rush, no fixed plan — just us and the river. The flowing water, the open sky, and the peaceful surroundings made it easy to forget everything else.
🎶 Nature’s Background Music
The sound of the river was loud and constant, almost musical.
I couldn’t resist joining in — singing loudly, competing playfully with the sound of flowing water.
It felt natural, effortless, and strangely freeing.
💧 Playing With Water & Simple Moments
We spent time touching the cold river water, splashing a little, and even doing some light stretches and push-ups on the smooth river rocks.
It wasn’t planned — it just happened.
Moments like these remind you how little is needed to feel truly happy.
🌦️ A Surprise of Weather
Interestingly, while Yousmarg meadow had rain earlier, this spot near Doodh Ganga was completely sunny.
Just a few kilometers made all the difference — nature showing her unpredictable side once again.
🍽️ Hunger Strikes at 2 PM
By afternoon, hunger finally reminded us of time.
We had completely forgotten about lunch while wandering around.
Luckily, a small local food stall nearby was open — the only one in the area.
- ☕ Black coffee & omelette for me and Suchismita
- 🍜 Maggi for Titli, enjoyed right beside the flowing river
During the rainy season, this very spot often stays under water — and yet, here we were, sitting calmly inside the river’s space, enjoying a simple meal.
🌿 A Moment to Remember
No crowd.
No noise.
Just flowing water, light laughter, and nature all around.
These are the moments that quietly stay with you long after the journey ends.

The Return Journey – Clouds, Confusion & Calm After Chaos
🚶♂️ Leaving Doodh Ganga
With our hearts full and energy slowly fading, it was time to head back from Doodh Ganga toward the Yousmarg parking area.
The walk back felt quieter — the kind of silence that comes after a fulfilling experience.
By around 2:50 PM, we reached near the parking zone where our car was supposed to be waiting.
📸 Small Moments, Big Smiles
Our horse helper looked genuinely happy after receiving his tip.
We shared a few smiles and took some photos together — simple, warm moments.
Nearby, two small local boys, barely 7–8 years old, shyly asked if we could take their photos too.
They didn’t ask for money.
They didn’t ask for the photos to be sent.
They were just happy to be clicked — pure, innocent joy.
🌧️ Weather Turns & Confusion Begins
Just as we reached the parking area, the sky suddenly darkened.
Strong winds picked up, clouds rolled in, and light rain began to fall.
But our car… was missing.
We stood there confused — the spot where we had parked earlier was now empty.
📞 Network Trouble & Waiting Game
Suchismita and Titli took shelter near a small local shop while I tried calling our driver.
No signal.
Not even a single bar.
The shop owner tried from his phone — still nothing.
I then contacted our tour coordinator, Rehana Madam, who tried reaching the driver from her side.
The shop owner calmly said,
“Don’t worry, he will come. Weather changes fast here.”
🌧️ A Walk in the Rain
With no other option, I took the umbrella and decided to search nearby.
The shopkeeper mentioned there might be another parking area closer to the main gate.
As I walked up, rain falling steadily, I finally spotted our car — parked near the upper gate.
And then I saw Sartaz Bhai, standing there.
Relief washed over me.
He explained that since the weather was turning bad, he thought it would be safer to move the car closer to the main road for an easier pickup.
A misunderstanding — but no blame. In the mountains, such things happen.
🚗 Reunited & Ready to Leave
I asked him to quickly drive down to the lower parking area where Suchismita and our daughter were waiting.
Soon, everyone was safely inside the car again.
By now it was almost 3:45 PM.
Lunch was completely forgotten, and the weather wasn’t inviting anymore.
We decided to skip food and start our return journey.
🛣️ The Way Back
This time, we took the right route, passing through Charar-e-Sharief.
We didn’t stop — only captured a few glimpses from the moving car.
The road felt quieter.
The day was slowly settling.
And the memories of Yousmarg stayed with us — raw, real, and unforgettable.

Lal Chowk: Where Kashmir’s Heart Beats Loudest
On our way back to Srinagar, we made a short yet meaningful stop at Lal Chowk, the most vibrant and symbolic part of the city. By now, it was around 6:15 PM, and the evening energy had begun to rise.
On the way, we shared some light snacks — thoughtfully packed by Suchismita from Kolkata — a small but comforting habit that had quietly accompanied us throughout the journey.
As we entered the city, the silence of the mountains slowly gave way to movement, color, and sound.
This was a different Kashmir — alive, expressive, and full of rhythm.
Lal Chowk – The Living Heart of Srinagar
Lal Chowk is not just a marketplace.
It is the heartbeat of Srinagar, where history, everyday life, and modern rhythm blend into one continuous flow.
Located at the very center of the city, Lal Chowk has witnessed decades of change — political, cultural, and social. From early morning shop shutters to glowing streetlights at night, the place never truly rests.
The Iconic Clock Tower (Ghanta Ghar)
Standing proudly at the heart of Lal Chowk, the Clock Tower is one of Srinagar’s most recognizable landmarks.
🕰️ Built in 2015
🏛️ Inspired by Central Asian architectural styles
✨ Designed with traditional Kashmiri elements
🌃 Beautifully illuminated after sunset
Though modern in construction, it has quickly become a symbol of unity, resilience, and everyday life in the city.
A Market That Never Sleeps
Walking through Lal Chowk feels entirely different from wandering through valleys and meadows.
Here you’ll find:
🧣 Kashmiri shawls, pashminas, and winter wear
🥜 Dry fruits — walnuts, almonds, raisins, saffron
🛍️ Handicrafts, footwear, electronics, and daily essentials
☕ Cafés, bakeries, tea stalls, and street vendors
This is not a tourist-only zone — it’s where locals shop, walk, argue, laugh, and live their everyday lives.
The Experience
The calm of the mountains fades into motion here.
Traffic hum replaces birdsong.
Shopkeepers call out offers.
Students, office-goers, and families move past each other in steady rhythm.
And through it all, the Clock Tower stands quietly — watching time pass, just as it always has.

A Quiet Goodbye: Reflections from Our Last Night in Kashmir
Back at the hotel, the day slowly replayed itself in our minds — wrong turns, misty meadows, silent valleys, and moments that stayed deeper than photographs. Yousmarg hadn’t been easy, but it had been honest. It gave us something rare — raw beauty, quiet strength, and a gentle reminder of how little is actually needed to feel content.
As the evening settled in, a quiet realization followed us:
this was our last night in Kashmir.
A journey that began with excitement and curiosity was now closing with gratitude and calm.
🌙 Heartfelt Conversations Before Goodbye
The night felt different — slower, softer, more human.
We spent time talking with the hotel staff, not as guests, but as fellow storytellers of life. Conversations flowed naturally:
✨ Sharing our travel experiences
✨ Listening to their daily routines and struggles
✨ Talking about tourism, seasons, and changing times
They spoke honestly about life in Kashmir and shared that during the Amarnath Yatra season, hotels often remain less busy as most visitors focus only on the pilgrimage route.
These simple conversations — free of rush and formality — became one of the most meaningful moments of the trip.
🍽️ A Dinner That Felt Like a Farewell
Dinner that night carried a different emotion.
Since we had skipped lunch, we sat down early — around 8:00 PM — and were welcomed with a comforting Kashmiri spread:
🍛 Fragrant Kashmiri Pulao
🍗 Rich, flavorful Kashmiri Chicken
🥟 Kashmiri Samai Payes
🥖 Soft, warm local breads
Each bite felt like a quiet goodbye — warm, familiar, and deeply satisfying.
Not just food, but comfort served on a plate.
🧳 Preparing for the Final Goodbye
As the night grew quieter, preparations began.
📷 Cameras were charged
💾 Memory cards cleared — not to erase moments, but to make space for what lies ahead
🧳 Bags slowly packed with care
Our flight was scheduled for 7:05 PM the next day, and with that realization came a gentle pause.
Lying there in silence, one thought stayed with us:
✨ Journeys may end, but the emotions they create stay forever.
Kashmir had given us memories, connections, and moments that would continue to travel with us — long after we left its valleys behind.
