“The real journey begins the moment silence speaks louder than words — when the ripples of Dal Lake whisper stories of the Himalayas.”
🌄 Day 1: Arrival at Srinagar & Night Stay at Houseboat
Some journeys are planned, but a few are written in the heart long before they begin.
Our Kashmir tour was one of those. It wasn’t just a trip — it was a dream unfolding slowly in the cold mountain air.

The flight from Kolkata to Srinagar felt ordinary until the clouds parted. Through the small airplane window, we saw a world made of white and gold — the majestic Himalayan ranges, their snow peaks glowing under the soft light of the setting sun. For a few moments, the cabin fell silent; even the sound of the engines faded in awe. My daughter, sitting by the window, whispered, “Baba, it’s like we’re flying over another world.”
As we munched on a simple sandwich, our eyes refused to move away from that magical view — it was as if Kashmir itself was welcoming us with open arms.
✈️ Arrival in Srinagar – A Chill, A Smile, A Beginning

We landed at Srinagar Airport at 6:05 PM. The air that greeted us outside was crisp and cold — the kind of cold that wakes your soul. A representative from Umifar Tour & Travels stood waiting with a smile, holding a placard with my name. Within minutes, our luggage was loaded, and our journey to Dal Lake (Ghat No. 19) began.

The ride was short — just 15 minutes — but enough to let the glow of streetlights reflect on the quiet waters beside the road. And then, suddenly, Dal Lake appeared — silent, vast, and shimmering under the evening sky. The reflection of distant lights looked like scattered stars floating on water.
🛶 The First Shikara Ride – A Family Memory Comes Full Circle

Our driver helped us board a Shikara, its curved canopy decorated with bright Kashmiri fabric. For me and my daughter, this was the first Shikara ride of our lives — something we had only seen in pictures or movies. But for my wife, it was a moment from her past returning softly.
Years ago, when she was about 15, she had taken her first Shikara ride with her father — my father-in-law — during her childhood visit to Kashmir. And now, decades later, she sat beside us, watching her own daughter live that same moment, with the same sparkle of wonder in her eyes.
As the boatman pushed away from the ghat, the wooden Shikara glided smoothly across the still lake. The gentle splash of the oar echoed in the silence, and the cool breeze brushed against our faces. Lights from nearby houseboats danced on the ripples, turning the water into molten gold. The air smelled faintly of wet wood and blooming lotus.
It was one of those rare moments when three lives — from three times — felt connected by one quiet lake.

🏠 Welcome to “Balmoral Castle” – Our Floating Home

The Shikara stopped beside a grand wooden houseboat with intricate carvings glowing in the lamplight — our Deluxe Houseboat, “Balmoral Castle.”
Stepping inside felt like stepping into another era. The interior was crafted entirely of carved walnut wood, with warm rugs, velvet curtains, and a cozy royal charm.
A smiling caretaker greeted us with steaming cups of Kashmiri Kahwa — that amber-colored tea brewed with saffron, almonds, and cardamom. The first sip was unforgettable — sweet, aromatic, and soothing. The warmth of the Kahwa blended perfectly with the cold night air and filled us with a calm happiness.

My daughter looked around wide-eyed, running her fingers over the carved wooden patterns. “It’s like a royal palace floating on water,” she said softly — and she was right. It was our palace for the night.
🍽️ Dinner by Candlelight – Warmth in the Cold
![]()
After settling in and capturing photos of the glittering reflections outside, we sat down for dinner at 9 PM. The caretaker had prepared a delicious spread — Korai Chicken, Kashmiri Aloo Dum, Butter Paneer, Dal, Plain Rice, Roti, and Salad.

A single candle flickered at the center of the table, its flame dancing in the reflection of the glass window. Outside, the lake was quiet, the faint sound of oars fading in the distance. Each bite of that warm food carried the love of Kashmiri hospitality — mild, flavorful, and comforting against the cold breeze that seeped through the windowpanes.
It wasn’t just dinner; it was a feeling — of family, warmth, and the start of a story we’d tell for years.
🌙 A Cold Night, A Warm Memory

After dinner, we stepped onto the houseboat’s small balcony. The chill of the mountain night touched our faces, and a soft mist hovered over Dal Lake. The moon’s reflection stretched like a silver ribbon across the still water. In that silence, we didn’t speak — we simply watched, breathed, and felt grateful.

Inside, the heater hummed softly. I backed up all our photos and videos to my hard drive, making sure the camera was ready for tomorrow’s adventure — Baisaran Valley, the Mini Switzerland of Kashmir. My daughter was already asleep, dreaming under a thick Kashmiri blanket, while my wife sat quietly by the window, lost in her own thoughts.
Perhaps she was remembering her father — and the Shikara ride from her youth — now reborn through her daughter’s eyes.

And as the houseboat swayed gently, the lake outside whispered us to sleep.
That was our first night in Kashmir — quiet, magical, and deeply personal.
